Prepare before adopting a cat or dog

Updated:

Before bringing home a cat or dog, consider your time, housing and long-term care rather than relying only on a listing photo.

Step-by-step

  1. Review your time. Who will feed and care for the pet when you are away? Discuss it with everyone at home.
  2. Prepare your space. Choose a place to rest and drink water, and move potentially dangerous items out of reach.
  3. Plan for care costs. Ask reliable providers about food, supplies, services and veterinary care, instead of relying on general promises in a post.
  4. Ask about handover. Request whatever information is available about habits, food, past care and how to reach the former caregiver.
  5. Arrange support. Ask a veterinarian about health or nutrition questions; when away, speak with a suitable pet sitter.

Checklist

  • Everyone at home agrees and the housing arrangement allows pets.
  • You have considered time, space and care costs.
  • You know how to contact the person handing over the pet.
  • You know where to ask a veterinarian if health questions arise.
